10 Reasons You Are Breaking Out (And some I bet you have not thought of)
You use the best-rated skin care products, you wash all your makeup off, you really take care of your skin – heck, you have even started drinking chlorophyll (all you TikTok lovers will know what I am talking about). Yet still, those pesky pimples are stuck to you like glue.
Unfortunately, there is more to your skin health than just the products you use (although the products you use do have a significant effect). Other factors may be the culprits ruining your all so perfect skincare routine, and I bet some of them you didn’t even know were affecting your skin – let’s look.
1 Your Cleansing Game Needs A Change
Maybe you’re only using a makeup wipe, or perhaps you cleanse at every chance you get. Unfortunately, both extremes are doing nothing but harming your skin’s health..
Solution: You only need to cleanse once in the morning and once at night (except for exercise) with a cleanser that will not strip your skin (aka our Clean Slate Cleanser).
2 You’re Doing It All
You’ve breakout out, and it is not welcome. You grab the scrubs, the mask, the pimple creams and the peels. Sorry to say, but you need to slow your horses. All those can be beneficial (individually and only when used every so often); using every trick under the book is not the best idea. Aggressively trying to clear your skin will actually do the opposite. Constantly using harsh products can affect your skin’s balance leading to more breakouts.
Solution: Stick to a simple routine; cleanser, facial oil, moisturiser and sunscreen. Use the extras such as peels and masks once a week to give your skin time to heal and breathe.
3 You’re Exercising Your Way To Clogged Pores
Maybe you’re like me, and you are a complete gym junkie (and buzzing off pre-workout), or you love to chase your dog around the backyard. Once your sweat starts to dry on your skin, all the makeup, dirt, and oils solidify in your pores to create a cosy home (but not a home we want to make).
Solution: Remove any makeup before exercising. Ensure you wash your face as soon as you can (no sitting on your phone at the gym trying to get that perfect angle after your sweaty sesh).
4 Sleeping On A Bed Of Bacteria
Your pillow can hold a lot of bacteria (and I mean a lot). From your skin oils and hair care products to dirt, your pillowcase could be leaving you a nasty morning surprise.
Solution: Wash your face before going to bed. Ensure you wash your pillowcase at least once a week (we recommend twice a week). Or, try out a silk pillowcase which is known for preventing bacteria build-up.
5 Your Hair Products Are Compromising Your Skin
We all want healthy, strong & shiny hair, but the ingredients in hair care products can clog your pores. Silicone and Laureth-23 are great for getting that silky smooth feeling. But, sadly they are also fantastic at clogging your pores.
Solution: Always cleanse your skin AFTER shampooing and conditioning and avoid applying styling products close to the hairline.
6 Your Not Getting Your Beauty Sleep
We have all heard the saying “get your beauty sleep,” and let me tell you, they were not kidding. Your sleep really does affect your skin health. For example, a study in the Journal ‘Clinical and Experimental Dermatology,’ found that people’s skin was more moisturised and could better self heal when they had 7-9 hours of sleep (samhealth.org).
Solution: Create a bedtime routine to make sure you are relaxed before going to bed (even if it means not watching TikTok for 3 hours in bed).
7 Your Using Harsh Ingredients
There’s a new skincare product, and everyone is raving about it. Still, it contains things like mineral oil, silicons and synthetic fragrances. Hate to break it to you, but these are doing more harm than good. They are significant pore-cloggers and just an overall no.
Solution: Use skincare with clean formulas such as Madazin skincare products, which are natural, vegan and cruelty-free.
8 Your Phone (Yes, Your Phone)
You were up all night reading text messages between you and that boy (or lady) to your bestie, both shook with what they said (the audacity, right?). But your phone was also on the café table and on the floor of your bathroom after going to the toilet (yes, I do that too). When making those phone calls, all that bacteria collected is transferred to your face (yuck)!
9 The Concerts You Are Holding In The Shower Are Affecting Your Skin Game
I too love signing songs while under boiling hot water. Sadly, hot water can really strip your skin of its natural oils and healthy bacteria. When your natural oils are stripped, your sebaceous glands go into overdrive meaning they produce excess sebum leading to breakouts.
You may also have hard water. Hard water contains a high percentage of minerals, reducing the ability to wash away residue from your products and thus clogging your skin.
Solution: Use lukewarm or room temperature water when showing/cleansing the skin. Use a water softener that can be attached to your shower head if you have hard water.
10 Your Makeup Tools
You have cleansed your skin, applied your facial oil, moisturiser, and SPF, and now you are ready to add some makeup. You pick up your blending sponge that has not been cleaned since you bought it. See the problem here?
Solution: Wash your makeup tools weekly. Always wash your tools after using them while having a breakout.
